our haunted house horror... oh the irony.
okay. so this is what hapened in town. i was emailing one of my many bezzies, erin, and decided the email was very bland and very, very short. what was soon to be a small stick on the floor of her forest of an inbox. how sad, i thought. then i decided to tell her about what kind of freaky experiances me, chloe, imogen and lahna seem to run right into.
there were LOTS of freaks in town today. when i say LOTS i mean exactly that. we were sitting on benches outside a graveyard after the haunted house fiasco im about to tell you about and there were three guys, one topless, who were doing flips over the bottom-of-my-ribs height wall and fliping backwards off of trees in the grave yard and alsorts of break-your-back-if-it-goes-wrong stunts. we were talking about the haunted house and watching them when one of them cut us off mid-sentance. he hadnt slit his throught on a broken bottle or broken his spine or neck or anything midly interesting like that. he was going a handstand on a big hard stone wall and looked like he was stuck. his top had slid down/up (whatever you want to call it) and we then realised they were all very muscly. therefor very strong. we decided to leave him be. he was there for what seemed forever (only about a minut) before he got down. well, when i say got down i mean flipped off his hands onto his feet blindly backwards. he wasnt even slightly flushed. they must do that a lot, then, i thought.
anyway, besides strange stuntmen in the graveyard and lots of weird people staring at mine and lahnas socked feet there was the haunted house incedent. here i go.
i was in town with chloe and lahna and immi... opposite strand and up a little bit theres a house. its hidden behind piles of bushes and trees and an old brick wall noone had even noticed before lahna pointed it out. noone had ever noticed the house till lahna pointed it out. everyone was oblivious to the house. noone had EVER seen it before.
chloe even said, "omg that house is sooo cool! i never noticed it before!!! how the hell did i miss it???" or something like that.
we went round the corner and realised that the house was absoloutly massive. and it looked like a haunted house. we saw the tiny gate to it and also then realised that it was COMPLETELY over grown. the grass was about half was up our knees and there were huge bushes and that brick wall i mentioned... even a few dead trees among the living ones!!! there was litter in the bushes and on the grass and everywhere. we did like a full survey of the house before anyone said anything. i think i said the first words. maybe it was lahna.
some one said " i wonder who lives there." and then someone else said "go see then." me and lahna were walking up to the house and there were no lights on and all the curtains were like, half closed, sort of pulled to like a door. it looked like noone was in or whoever lived there was on holiday or something. well, it would have if there werent odd things lying on the widow sill or infront of the pulled to curtains. there was a new lamp which was the only colourfull thing in veiw with the plastic wrapper still on it and the plug all wound and tied up. that was one of the window sills on the second floor (it had three floors, and probably a basement too) there was otherstuff on the window sills but they didnt look out of place as such.
with no light coming out of the windows and the complete cover of darkness from the trees, lahna was on the verge of freaking out. we still opened the gate anyway, which had the certain creak that belonged to the sense of the house. we walked the path of dirt and long fallen leaves (in our socks with our shoes in our bags. we didnt want to wear our shoes. i took mine of because of the blister on the back of my foot from my new school shoes.) to the door of the house. it suited the house as well as the creaky, rusted gate did. it was a heavy, thick looking door with stained glass which looked like it could never be kicked down. it was then we realised the whole house was covered in cobwebs, as was the gate, and my sleeve which i used to open the gate. i pointed out the old looking doorbell and wondered silently if it worked.
i pressed it. it worked. we heard it loud and clear, from behind the heavy looking door.we waited for about a minit in front of this scary door untill lahna wondered out loud if we should give up. we did. we closed the gate behind us and ran across the road to chloe and immi, who were standing there like angry lost sheep with the strangest expression of outrage and horror on their faces.
"there wasnt anyone in." lahna said. "i realy wanted to see who lived there." we all looked back at the house to the window on the second floor where the new lamp sat on the window sill next to a clothes rack with clothes still in laundry bags, an orange tinted light turned on behind.
"but the light's on" chloe said, almost like a delayed reaction."it wasnt on before."
i couldnt decide if the clothes rail wasnt there before, or if i had simply overlooked it.
"so there is someone in."
"maybe they didnt hear the bell."
"maybe its a crack house."
" maybe theyre just old."
"maybe they were in another room."
"i think theyre mens clothing on the rail."
"should we go ring again?"
everyone stopped reaching out with their minds and imagination, grasping for some explanation, trying to fit together peices from seperate puzzles.
all we knew was; it looked haunted; it was over grown; there were heavy dusty curtains hanging behind thick windows; the door looked very secure; the gate creaked; it looked deserted untill the light came on up in the second story window; we were nearly freaking out; there was an out-of-place lamp in the previously mentioned window; the look of the house would probably turn away junk mail and kids looking for dogs to walk; noone answered the door; noone had even noticed the house, gate or wall.
"im going to try again." i do that sometimes. let my curiosity dominate the only part of my mind that makes sense.
i crossed back over the road, aware of lahna following, opened the gate, and we walked the path again.coing up to the door, we hesitated. nothing was said for a moment whilst we brooded over the facts that whoever lived inside the dark house clearly didnt want to be disturbed and that we didnt know what kind of human would answer the door. for all we knew it could be complete phsyco lurking in the shadows. or phsyco's. maybe it was a crack house after all. i silently planned to ask for becky when they opened the door after we rang the doorbell once more. i asked lahna what it was worth then decided i was going to die if i didnt find out who lived in this bizzare house. just as my finger hovered over the doorbell, there was a thuded bumb coming from just behing the door. we turned and ran. we ran through the gate, closing it subconciously, and ran. we ran across the road and realised chloe and immi had started up the road before we had rung the bell. we ran after them. just as we reached them i heard something. it sounded like someone calling after us and it sounded like it didnt belong in the otherwise cheery, bustle of town. i spun ound the exact same time as lahna.
"you heard that too? the voice? it sounded like someone calling "hello?" like they were scared." we looked at each other. "they could have closed the door." she said as we ran back.
the statement didnt make sense at the time but i didnt even realise.the door was still closed and the light on the second floor was off. it took us a moment to register this, and, by time we had, chloe and imogen came running after us. chloe looked very annoyed. neither of them had heard a thing. i wondered silently, idly, if we were imagining it or someone from another house was saying it. the four of us walked off, me and lahna in a state of bewilderment and confusion. how odd, i thought.
